Summary

Five new lab-backed rooms completing web-track batch: cartographer (API discovery, 150), tenant-trouble (IDOR via tenant header, 200), graph-maze (GraphQL introspection + missing object authz, 225), cache-me-outside (response cache poisoning, 275), race-to-zero (TOCTOU withdrawal race, 250). All follow the bundle contract: Flask target on 8000, /healthz, non-root uid 10001, per-session flags, hints 0/10/25.

Proof

  • .venv/bin/cyberrange lint content/rooms/ → exit 0 for all five
  • cyberrange solve run twice per room with fresh per-session flags → PASS both passes each

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added five web security challenge rooms: Cache Me Outside, Cartographer, Graph Maze, Race to Zero, and Tenant Trouble.
    • Each room includes a guided lesson, objectives, hints, solution walkthrough, scoped target, and session-based flag validation.
    • Added runnable practice applications covering cache poisoning, API discovery, GraphQL authorization, race conditions, and cross-tenant access.
    • Included automated intended-path solvers and local verification instructions for each challenge.
  • Documentation

    • Added room-specific README files describing scenarios, learning goals, layouts, and verification steps.

This PR adds five rooms, but the current head still contains issues that can break learner workflows, send API clients to the wrong service, return unexpected server errors, or expose an unintended script-execution path. The affected code and documentation should be corrected before the PR is merged.

🌐 Web query:

HTTPX official documentation exceptions Response.json JSONDecodeError request timeout

💡 Result:

HTTPX utilizes a structured exception hierarchy and a robust timeout configuration system [1][2]. Exception Hierarchy The base class for all exceptions in HTTPX is httpx.HTTPError [1]. Key subclasses include: - RequestError: The base class for all exceptions occurring while issuing an HTTP request, containing a.request attribute [1][3]. - HTTPStatusError: Raised by response.raise_for_status for 4xx or 5xx responses, containing both.request and.response attributes [1][3]. - TimeoutException: The base class for all timeout-related errors (including ConnectTimeout, ReadTimeout, WriteTimeout, and PoolTimeout) [1][2]. Response.json and JSONDecodeError The.json method on a Response object parses the response content as JSON [4]. It can raise: - json.decoder.JSONDecodeError: Occurs if the response content is not valid JSON (e.g., an empty response or malformed data) [5][6]. - UnicodeDecodeError: May occur if the content cannot be correctly decoded into a string before JSON parsing [5][7]. Request Timeouts HTTPX enforces a default 5-second timeout on all network operations [2]. You can configure timeouts globally on a Client or per-request [2]. The Timeout configuration supports four distinct operations [2][8]: - connect: Time to establish a socket connection. - read: Time to wait for a chunk of data to be received. - write: Time to wait for a chunk of data to be sent. - pool: Time to wait for acquiring a connection from the connection pool. Example configuration: timeout = httpx.Timeout(10.0, connect=60.0) # 60s for connect, 10s for others client = httpx.Client(timeout=timeout)

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Fix the concurrent-request shell example.

for i in 1..5 iterates once because 1..5 is one literal word. wait. is not the wait command. The documented solution therefore does not create the required withdrawal race.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Handle transport failures inside each retry attempt.

httpx.post, httpx.get, and Future.result() can raise transport exceptions. The exception escapes solve instead of advancing to the next attempt. A temporary target connection failure then aborts the solver and prevents it from returning its required TaskResult.

Wrap each attempt in try/except httpx.HTTPError, set detail, sleep, and continue.

Escape name before rendering it.

When a client sends HTML in name, Line 88 inserts that value into the response without escaping. A payload such as <script>...</script> executes at the target origin. This creates an unintended reflected XSS path beside the intended TOCTOU workflow.
