Remove /static/wp-content/uploads and /static/wp/wp-content/uploads #6

Description

@peterjc

We just need to copy their content over to https://github.com/OBF/wp-content/ which will be read-only post-migration, and adjust URLs accordingly to /wp-content/...

(And then delete the files here and remove them from the git history if large)

    I cleaned up the last handful of files that was still in the /wp-content folder of this repo

    Nice. Do we still need /static/w/images or are they again already on https://github.com/OBF/wp-content/ (and we just need to tweak a few URLs)?

    Once we're happy I do still want to run the numbers for a git history rewrite as I'm expecting a massive drop in repository size. That will benefit anyone taking a clone in future (but with the minor invoncience for us few with an existing clone).

    but we'll just need to sync and git pull again to get the changes, right? will any other actions be required? (sorry, i'm still semi-clueless about git)

    @Nomi when a main branch history is rewritten, assuming you have no pending changes on branches of your own, by far the simplest way to deal with it is delete your local copy and take a fresh clone. So if we go ahead, we'll coordinate with you to make sure the timing isn't an issue.

  7. Nomi commented on Feb 19, 2025

    @Nomi

    @peterjc you seem to have tagged the wrong person. I have no idea what this project is about, but wow, rewriting the main branch history seems too nuclear of an option.

    I'm assuming it was meant for @nlharris.

    Sorry @Nomi (and yes, should have been @nlharris).

    Yes, rewriting the history is drastic but we have hundreds of MB of images bloating the current history which we don't need (and this is a young repository with only 3 contributors thus far).

    @peterjc Those aren't yet on the wp-static, but also don't seem to take up a lot of space (it's ~4 mb, mostly due to a treasurer report that i'm not sure is linked from anywhere).

    If you want to try copying them into the wp-content folder and then edit the markdown files please do! But I think worst case it's okay to keep it as is!

    The ugly paths under /static/w/images bug me :LOL:

    Actually, these are relics from the MediaWiki site, e.g. /static/w/images/a/ac/HP-logo-no-tagline.png is already at https://github.com/OBF/wiki/blob/main/HP-logo-no-tagline.png and https://obf.github.io/wiki/HP-logo-no-tagline.png - so they are almost certainly not being used in the former WordPress content.

User account creation via the old login system will be disabled and OpenID will be the default path for new accounts so users to make wiki changes.  This currently appears to have cut the incidence of spam significantly.  We will be adding information to the login pages to redirect new users to the new login page.

    Thank you for trying to keep the old pages working. FWIW, I don't view it as high priority if the things you listed above break. One is to a program for an old BOSC; the others are images on old posts.

    Huh. Those can probably be fixed by replacing /w/.*/ with just /wiki/ - I can try with sed later if you don't beat me to it - and it is a short enough list to check them all individually too.

    And Nomi, I personaly consider maintaining the old pages to be an important part of our legacy and not to be dismissed. Taking more care there is arguably more important as is if current content breaks, we'd hear about it very quickly 😉 - but I understand your view too.

    Cross reference #43 for documenting the submodule solution... not ideal as it make avouding the ~450MB download harder.

    Doing the same for static/w/images/ would mean pulling in https://github.com/OBF/wiki as a submodule too.

    Unless unless we explicitly use full URLs for those files including our domain? i.e. Tweak the mardown files to say https://www.open-bio.org/wiki/Curoverse.png rather than a local reference to the file /w/images/e/e5/Curoverse.png - and things should work with a lightweight repository to clone.

  16. gedankenstuecke commented on Mar 5, 2025

    @gedankenstuecke

    I mean, given that it seems like the submodule bit wasn't the solution to the problem with the missing images, we could remove it again.

    But regardless, it would mean that people then have to first manually download the wp-content repo and then do a symlink to make it work.

    The git submodule option has the benefit that the initial clone of the obf.github.io does remain small, as at least for standard git installs one needs to manually trigger the git submodule init for it to grab the submodule files too. So from that perspective it acts like a "simpler" version of doing the symlinking manually?

  17. peterjc commented on Mar 5, 2025

    @peterjc
    MemberAuthor

    The submodule is easier than the symlink I think, and you could still make contributions at the command line without downloading the old images… but local testing would be a little different for the older posts.

    What do you think about explicitly linking to the HTTPS hosted copy of the old images? Might that solve local builds?

  18. gedankenstuecke commented on Mar 5, 2025

    @gedankenstuecke
    Member

    Well, I think the local testing would be the same for either of the options, as for the symlink one would also need to download the wp-content repo to see them and otherwise the outcome would be the same?

    We could try doing hard links to the open-bio.org images, but i'm not 100% sure if that would have some unforeseen consequences?

    Maybe the most pragmatic approach would be to not care too much about the old images, as those will only be affecting older blog posts? If there's images we still want to use in the newer posts or more persistent pages, we could also move those into the main repo and then for practical purposes it should not make a difference if the older images are available offline or not?

    That's not the case - the old images are also used a lot in old AND NEW pages and posts. For example, I'm working on a post about financial support options for BOSC 2025, and for the part of that post about OBF Travel Awards, I scanned past blog posts by awardees to look for good images to use. (I noticed that the images in blog posts almost never have meaningful names - they're mostly like image6.jpg.) I will add new images to img/ but would still like to be able to use old ones without having to copy them to img/.

    I'd say moving the ones we still actively want to use would not be too bad, especially as it gives us a chance to give them more meaningful names? But in any case, the git submodule way that's currently setup should work fine for getting it to display the images locally (at the cost of the 500 mb download)

    If you're willing to do that, go for it! I don't have the time or energy to look through possibly thousands of images in hundreds of directories, decide which I might someday want to use in a page or post, and then copy it and rename it. I don't see a good way to automate that process.

    I meant when you run into images you want to re-use, and not do a blanket-replace. If you find an image you want to re-use you could copy it with a filename
