Please publish prebuilt wheels for Python 3.14 on PyPI #1282

Closed

Description

@NicolasFerec

Hi @elprans ,

Could you please release prebuilt wheels for Python 3.14 on PyPI?

Currently, when installing asyncpg on environments with Python 3.14, the package has to be built from source every time, which significantly slows down deployments for projects that depend on it.

Having official wheels for Python 3.14 would greatly improve installation speed and developer experience.

Thanks a lot for your work on asyncpg! 🙏

    Hey @esthorace, thanks for your reply!

    Just to clarify, I'm not experiencing any installation failure. My project runs on Ubuntu locally and in a Linux-based production environment too.

    What I was referring to is the lack of prebuilt wheels for Python 3.14. Since upgrading my project to Python 3.14, installing dependencies now takes over a minute instead of just a few seconds, because asyncpg has to be built from source each time.

    Also, it looks like the Windows-related installation issue you mentioned was already addressed in #1279
    , which was merged a few days ago but hasn’t been released yet.

    So everything works fine on my end, but it would be great if the release workflow could publish prebuilt wheels for Python 3.14 so installations can be fast again.

    Thanks! 🙏

    @ddanier

    I want to second this request 👍

    I am using the package in docker using the "slim" image variant (python:3.14-slim). As this variant does not include the necessary means to compile the package the install does fail. In my case using the "slim" image is required for security reasons, as it does includes way less packages and thus does provides only little attack surface when compared to the normal image (looking only at the image details).

    We could build the asyncpg package inside the pipeline, but that would complicate things - I try to not do this so far. This is the only thing left blocking the Python 3.14 update.

    @ddanier

    Maybe also see #1277 - I think this might also be related to the lack of prebuilt wheels.

    @awoimbee

    A new release is needed, it would also fix #1250

    Hi all, not sure how long until we will get a release (and lol @ the comment preceding mine), but let's try to:

    • Only comment if you have something material to add that has not been said.
    • If you just want to +1 this request, use the thumbs up reaction on the issue, don't make another comment.
    • Subscribe to the issue and wait patiently for updates, don't make a comment asking if there is any update... if there is no release on PyPI or GitHub and no comment from the package maintainers in the issue here, then we can all safely assume there is no update on the status of the release.

    This should help cut down on spam from people bumping the thread, keeping the signal to noise ratio high.

    With that said, @elprans I think many of us (32 thumbs up as of right now) would appreciate a new release or wheels built for 3.14. Not sure if you have seen this issue yet. Thanks for your attention to this.

    @kamikaze

    switching to psycopg3 solved our problem.

    @DmitriyYukhanov

    I'm on Windows, and installing from sources in WSL didn't work (hope the mentioned PR will fix that), but for now, I had to switch to psycopg3 as well.

    I had to deal with a Cython regression causing massive refleakage on 3.14. It's now resolved upstream, I'll get the 3.14 wheels building soon.
