Feature Request: Ability to set a specific Temp Basal #937
T1D is an active child, and it is not possible to have the iphone and RL near them at all times for activities. The added ability to set a temporary basal for activity would be very helpful as there are long periods of time (up to 2 hours +) where LOOP will not be able to consistently get any type of data. Our current method of dealing with this is to set a lower than normal temp basal for the duration of the activity to prevent a low. Suspending all insulin would be to much of a loss of insulin, and setting the normal daily basal is to much insulin. Any high BG is corrected after the activity as it is safer to be a little high than risk a low in the middle of an athletic event.
One such activity is Soccer. The iphone must stay on the sidelines, and we can monitor BG as she comes back to the sideline occasionally, so we get Dexcom to connect and quickly, but the time spent within the radio range of the iphone and the RL is not long enough to adequately adjust to the activity
Another activity is swimming. The water seems to block the Dexcom signal, and even with a waterproof case for the phone, we rarely get any type of dexcom updates while in the water. A lower than normal temp basal is very useful here.

Q solution, maybe a button for manual TBR setting (best would be in combinition with ISF).
use case as decribed above: swimming, no RL comm, so this simply can set before go into the water and the TBR will run for the given time - Thx, Matthias

We definitely want this for the exact same reason. Swimming, gymnastics, dance, soccer. We frequently set a 75% basal decrease for 2 hours. We do workarounds, but they don't work as well as this would.

This is something that we use often with Omnipod before looping. When we know that my son will be disconnected from the dex, swimming, sports, playing at the beach, etc, we use a temp basal of something like 30% less for 3 hours to prevent a low. Then the pod remembers the temp the whole time it's disconnected. With loop, I love the ability to set the override easily, but would love the ability to set a specific time for the override to stay on even when the loop disconnects.
I few days ago I was doing a swimming exercise, reduced my basal segment by reducing 50%. So far so good, this workaround was working, but unfortunately I forget to set 100% again and was wondering about spikes.
Long story short: I would highly appreciate a "TBR button" (same as PDM) for TBR adustments.

This feature would be so useful for us. When we go swimming it’s for an extended period of time (5hrs+) so that long without insulin isn’t a good option. Temporary basal rate reduction is what I miss the most from the PDM!
I think this feature is absolutely essential for those people like me that need to absolutely control the basal rate prior to exercise. It's not enough to have a strategy to "trick" the overrides feature into slowing the dose by "some amount" or to "likely not deliver insulin". I would like to definitively say, "for 3 hours deliver only a basal rate of .1u/hr and do not auto-bolus". This is a daily treatment that I need and suspect that others do as well. What can I do to help?
Even better would be the ability to schedule a temp basal. For example, "for 2 hours before I wake up tomorrow at 6:00 am, deliver only .5u/hr"
I don't know how to do that, but I'll scour his commits and see what I can find. Its been around a while.
Were you able to find anything of use? This request has been hanging around a while and seems to have some support in the community. I'd like to help with this but it obviously needs to be something the main development group is on board with as I'd like to see it in the main branch and not some other fork. It's probably also true that there are many other better coders than me who could do this well.
@IsThisPaul I was not. Sorry for not circling back around.
I am not adept enough to find the right commits in the FreeAPS repo. I tried. At the time Ivan wasn't super available to help. Maybe we can ask or maybe a developer can to a diff to compare how its done.
@marionbarker has too much to do or I'd ask her to try and find it.
I’m down to help but I don’t know the code base well yet and am rusty as a
coder. But I’m willing if there’s support to having a feature like this in
the main dev fork.
Pretty simple workaround for Medtronic is simply to set open loop, and then set the temp basal directly on the pump. So I’m not sure it’s needed for Medtronic.

I would find this very helpful also!

A few days ago I was swimming, before I have reduced my basal segment by 50%.
It's working but a "dirty" workaround.
I'd love to have a simple button setting a TBR for this use case the RL is out of range (water), thanks!

That would be a great and - for many users - necessary feature!

I would also love this feature!

Great idea! I have pretty much the same use case with soccer and swimming.

Would love this too for swimming (and other things)

T1D is a water polo player & can spend a hour at a time in the water without getting out. This feature would be really useful :)

Would love to take a look at a PR for this. I'm not familiar with the implementation you're referring to.

I believe this can be closed. It has been added to Loop-dev for pods. I'm not sure if it is planned for Medtronic (and thus should stay open).

marionbarker commentedon Aug 17, 2022
The nice thing about the way it is implemented for pods is that closed loop resumes when Manual Temp Basal expires.
