docs(hardware): the boot disk is fitted, and the BIOS names it (#413) - #476

The optical drive came out on 2026-09-16 and the S3520 took its place. BIOS reports `SATA Drive 5 Hard Disk INTEL SSDSC2BB240G7`, and the G7 suffix is the S3520 generation — so the drive is the part the listing described, on the port the DVD vacated, with both cables inherited rather than found. That is the third listing claim on this machine to survive contact with the machine. Two assumptions this document was carrying are now facts. The bracket really is a 5.25"-to-2.5" adapter and really does fit both the drive and the bay; that was written as a thing to check and is now a thing that happened. And the bay turns out to be a cage with its own fan on the board's AUX1_FAN header, which the entry now records as not optional — it is the airflow over the drive bays, and two 7200 rpm Exos under a scrub will want it. It was unplugged to get the cage out and is reconnected, reading Aux Fan: Operating. What is still owed on the drive has not moved and is called out as needing smartctl rather than the BIOS: the serial, Power_On_Hours and Percentage_Used. The entry says to read them before TrueNAS is written to the disk rather than after, and names the installer's shell as where that happens — one menu choice ahead of the install that would otherwise make the check moot. A data-centre SSD at high wear is a return, and the BIOS summary cannot tell you. The bracket and the tape are still unnamed. That was previously deferred because nothing is recorded before it is in hand; they are in hand and now fitted, so the entry says plainly that the naming is owed rather than waited on. That's the third listing claim on this machine to survive contact with the
machine, after the CPU and the ECC.
Two assumptions became facts
the drive and the bay. That was written as a thing to check; it's now a thing
that happened.
AUX1_FANheader. Theentry now records that fan as not optional — it's the airflow over the
drive bays, and two 7200 rpm Exos under a scrub will want it. It had to come
off to get the cage out; it's back on and reading
Operating.What's still owed hasn't moved
The serial,
Power_On_HoursandPercentage_Used— and the entry now saysexplicitly that these need
smartctl, not the BIOS, and want reading beforeTrueNAS is written to the disk rather than after. It names the installer's shell
as where that happens: one menu choice ahead of the install that would otherwise
make the check moot.
A data-centre SSD at high wear is a return, and the BIOS summary can't tell you
which you have.
Still unnamed
The bracket and the tape. That was previously deferred on the grounds that
nothing is recorded before it's in hand — they're in hand and fitted now, so
the entry says plainly that the naming is owed rather than waited on.
