Merge Risk: High

This is a major upgrade across two versions, from v5 to v7, which introduces significant breaking changes. Developers must follow migration guides for both v6 and v7.

Astro 6.0 Breaking Changes:

  • Node.js Requirement: Support for Node.js 18 & 20 is dropped. Node.js 22+ is now required.
  • Content Collections: Legacy Content Collections are no longer supported. All collections must be migrated to the Content Layer API introduced in v5.
  • Zod 4 Upgrade: Astro's internal dependency, Zod, has been upgraded to v4. Projects using Zod schemas may need to update them.
  • Removed APIs: Astro.glob() is removed in favor of import.meta.glob(). Other deprecated APIs like emitESMImage() and the <ViewTransitions /> component are also removed.
  • Vite Environment API: The development server was refactored to use Vite's Environment API, which can cause breaking changes in integrations, especially the Cloudflare adapter.

Astro 7.0 Breaking Changes:

  • Rust Compiler: The .astro compiler has been rewritten in Rust, replacing the Go-based one. The new compiler is stricter and will now error on invalid HTML (like unclosed tags) that was previously auto-corrected.
  • Whitespace Handling: The default for compressHTML is now 'jsx', which strips all whitespace between elements, unlike the previous HTML-aware compression. This can affect inline element spacing.
  • Markdown Pipeline: Astro now uses its native Rust-powered pipeline (Sätteri) for Markdown and MDX, replacing the remark/rehype pipeline.
  • Vite 8 Upgrade: Astro 7 is built on Vite 8. Check the Vite 8 migration guide for any breaking changes if you have custom Vite configurations.
  • Reserved File Name: src/fetch.ts is now a reserved file name for the new Advanced Routing feature.

Recommendation:
This upgrade requires careful, sequential migration. First, follow the Astro v6 upgrade guide, paying close attention to the content collections and Node.js version changes. After successfully migrating to v6, proceed with the Astro v7 upgrade guide, focusing on potential HTML syntax errors and whitespace changes introduced by the new Rust compiler.

Code Review

This pull request upgrades the astro dependency to version ^7.0.0 in package.json. The review feedback points out critical breaking incompatibilities introduced by this upgrade, specifically noting that companion dependencies like @astrojs/starlight and @astrojs/markdown-remark must also be updated, and the Markdown processor configuration needs to be adjusted to maintain compatibility with existing plugins.

Important

The consumer version of Gemini Code Assist on GitHub is being sunset. Starting June 18, 2026, new organization installations will be blocked, and all code review activity will officially cease on July 17, 2026.

⚠️ Breaking Dependency Incompatibilities with Astro 7.0.0

Upgrading astro to ^7.0.0 without updating its companion integrations and configuration will break the build. Please address the following issues:

  1. Incompatible @astrojs/starlight Version:

    • The project currently uses "@astrojs/starlight": "^0.37.6" (line 26).
    • Starlight v0.41.0 or higher is required to support Astro 7.0.0. Using an older version will cause build/runtime failures.
  2. Incompatible @astrojs/markdown-remark Version:

    • The project currently uses "@astrojs/markdown-remark": "^6.3.10" (line 24).
    • This must be upgraded to "^7.0.0" to be compatible with Astro 7.0.0.
  3. Markdown Processor Defaults (Sätteri vs Unified):

    • Astro 7.0.0 introduces Sätteri (a Rust-based processor) as the default Markdown processor, which does not support remark or rehype plugins.
    • Since this project configures several custom remark/rehype plugins in astro.config.mjs (such as remarkHeadingId, remarkLocalizeLinks, rehypeHeadingIds, rehypeAutolinkHeadings, and rehypeExternalLinks), these plugins will be ignored under Sätteri.
    • To keep using these plugins, you must explicitly import and configure the unified processor in astro.config.mjs:
      import { unified } from '@astrojs/markdown-remark';

      export default defineConfig({
        markdown: {
          processor: unified({
            remarkPlugins: [remarkHeadingId, remarkLocalizeLinks],
            rehypePlugins: [rehypeHeadingIds, ...]
          })
        }
      });

WARNING

File Line Issue
package.json 37 Major astro upgrade ^5.18.1 -> ^7.0.0 (two majors) introduces breaking changes. An active review comment from gemini-code-assist[bot] already covers this in detail (incompatible @astrojs/starlight/@astrojs/markdown-remark versions, Rust markdown processor/Sätteri defaults, Vite 8, stricter Rust .astro compiler, Node 22+ requirement, removed Astro.glob()). Not duplicated here.
Files Reviewed (1 file)
  • package.json - 1 issue (pre-existing active review comment, not duplicated)

The only changed line (package.json:37) is a two-major-version jump of astro. It is already covered by an active, comprehensive inline review comment, so no duplicate was posted. This review found no additional distinct issues in the changed code.
