Progress snapshot, not for merge.

This draft PR shows work in progress from the local worktree /root/cortex-dev/worktrees/task16-desktop-calls. The branch progress/task16-desktop-calls is a snapshot of that worktree's uncommitted changes on top of the base commit. It is refreshed with /root/cortex-dev/progress-prs/refresh.sh, which pushes a new fast-forward commit; the worktree itself is never modified. Local evidence (.omo/), dependencies, build output and env files are excluded. Every snapshot is scanned for secrets before it is pushed.

Scope

Desktop (Electron) client for Bot live calls: main process owns ticket, socket and bearer.

Status (from the orchestration ledger)

Same Task 16 gate REJECT 2026-10-06T11:21 as the web side (desktop 410 unit + 1 skip pass; real Electron/Xvfb calls pass, but receipts and minimize/navigation scenarios missing). Wave 2 pending.

Ledger: /root/omo-herdr-wt/hermes-docs-qa-docs-attempt2/.omo/ulw-execute/ledger.jsonl

Evidence (local paths on the dev host, not in this branch)

  • backend worktree task16-web-calls: .omo/evidence/cortex-completion/task-16/gate-review.md

Merge Risk

Merge Risk: 🟠 High · up to 131dc

After native device sign-in, Remote Chat fails for account users. Remote Code prompts can hang indefinitely. Ending a Bot call leaves the call controls stuck in an active state. This draft should not merge until these flows are fixed.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟠 High · up to 131dc

Call startup can survive leaving the call screen, allowing microphone capture and a remote call to begin without a visible call panel. This affects signed-in desktop users who grant microphone permission. Existing credential protections limit exposure, but do not resolve the call-lifecycle problem.

Retained concerns

  • High · security · inferred: Call initiation is not owned by a cancellable operation from permission request through authenticated admission. While microphone initialization is pending, live.current remains null, so unmount cleanup returns without cancelling initiation. After navigation, the continuation can acquire the microphone, invoke bridge.start, and stream audio from a detached component. Overlapping initiation is also admitted before that handle exists. The main host has a corresponding gap around awaited authentication: end or another start cannot invalidate the pending start, which can subsequently install a session or displace a session without releasing it. Untagged capture and playback channels make resource ownership dependent on the global current call. This newly introduced lifecycle can defeat the intended stop-on-navigation and one-call-per-window guarantees; it requires an authenticated desktop session and microphone permission, not unauthenticated remote access.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The supported call-lifecycle exposure concerns microphone audio and authenticated call resources in a signed-in desktop window. A user must have initiated a call and granted microphone permission. The inspected path does not establish unauthenticated access, sandbox escape, or cross-tenant compromise.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A user can initiate a call, leave the Bot screen while microphone initialization is pending, and then complete permission acquisition. Cleanup has already returned because no live handle existed. The old continuation starts the authenticated call and supplies microphone frames despite the call panel having unmounted. This is an introduced privacy-control failure inferred from source, not a runtime-verified exploit.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Renderer-supplied connection metadata cannot establish sign-in. Work Bot mutations use the current identity's binding and epoch, while remote transport enforces same-origin requests, refuses redirects, and checks ownership around responses.
  • observed — App authorization accepts a provider-returned HTTPS redirect without embedded username/password, stores it within the identity-scoped binding, and opens it externally. Local code establishes syntax and identity controls, but not provider provenance or redirect lifetime; attacker influence and credential disclosure remain unproven.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Established call sessions have explicit terminal cleanup, playback flushing, socket-identity filtering, and bounded resume attempts. These controls contain established sessions but do not cover initiation before the renderer or host installs its ownership handle.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Use one cancellable, owner-bound call intent established before permission or authentication awaits. Carry its identity through admission and PCM/control messages, invalidate it on navigation and end, and release late-acquired media or tickets instead of installing them into a replacement call.

🟠 Major · Accept scope: "account" sessions in the renderer ownership checks. · remote-chat.tsx:145-146

packages/app/src/screens/chat/remote-chat.tsx:145-146
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Accept scope: "account" sessions in the renderer ownership checks.

For a binding with accountID, core now creates and discovers sessions with scope: "account" (packages/core/src/remote-sessions.ts Lines 158 and 177). matches() on Line 146 still requires scope === "process". Line 314 rejects a new session for the same reason. This happens after native device sign-in:

  • read() calls fail() and shows unavailable.
  • send() calls fail() after the create request returns.
  • The new account branches on Lines 213 and 482 never run with loaded data.

Remote Chat therefore fails for every account-backed user. The E2E tests use email-code sign-in, which creates process-scoped sessions, so they do not cover this path.

Proposed fix
-    value.source === "remote" && value.scope === "process" && value.id === target && value.epoch === expected;
+    value.source === "remote" && (value.scope === "process" || value.scope === "account") && value.id === target && value.epoch === expected;
-        if (target.source !== "remote" || target.scope !== "process" || target.epoch !== expected
+        if (target.source !== "remote" || !matches(target, target.id, expected!)

Let the user change the model in the session composer, or hide the selector.

setModel={() => {}} renders an enabled <select> that ignores the user's choice. The user can pick a model, but the selection has no effect. Disable the select in this view, or wire it to a real model change.

Carry the last sample into the next chunk, or resampleTo16k emits zero samples.

The loop stops when pos >= input.length - 1. If pos ends in [length-1, length), then carry.pos becomes negative. In the next chunk, i = -1, so input[-1] is undefined. The result is NaN, and Int16Array.from converts it to 0. At 48 kHz with 128-sample worklet chunks, this condition happens often. Each time, the capture stream gets a spurious zero sample, which produces audible clicks for speech recognition.

Set a terminal snapshot when the user ends the call.

teardown removes the IPC listeners through c.stop(). In main, end() calls release() (unsubscribe) before session.end(). Because of this order, the renderer never receives an ended snapshot. snap.phase keeps its last active value, for example listening. The panel keeps the mute, interrupt and end controls, and the Call again button does not appear. Clicking End again does nothing because live.current is already null.

Resolve or reject admission when the turn ends before admitted() runs.

The stream can complete without calling onResponse. An example is an empty stream. In that case the success handler sets delivery to "settled" but never settles admitted. Then await admitted at Line 130 waits forever, so the renderer stays busy with no recovery. The same hang occurs on the success path when accepted is false.

Reject the pending admission in stop.

stop clears record.admission and detaches the delivery. After the detach, the stream aborts and done rejects. The rejection handler then sees record.delivery !== delivery and calls rejectAdmission, so this path works. One case remains: stop throws before detach because owner.stop failed. In that case admission is already cleared, and a late admitted() callback rejects the admission. The user sees the prompt fail even though the backend accepted it. Clear record.admission only after owner.stop succeeds.

Handle synchronous watch termination before storing the watch.

WorkBotBinding.watch does not require asynchronous callback execution. If disconnected() runs during owner.watch(...), the callback reads watch before its declaration and can throw. Track termination before storing the returned watch.

Settle ready when the event stream ends normally.

The server can close the stream cleanly before onResponse runs. In that case ready never settles. After a stream that was already ready ends cleanly, the watch stays attached in core and is never re-armed, so changed notifications stop. Reject ready after the loop ends, or signal the end of the stream so that core clears record.watch.

Remove the claim that discovery stops at 100 conversations. discover() already paginates active and archived lists until the last page. These texts still describe a cap of 100 each.

  • packages/i18n/locales/en/chat.json#L91-L91: remove the 100-chat cap sentence from remote.accountBody. Update the other locale remote.accountBody strings the same way.
  • docs/engine.md#L49-L51: replace the cursorless 100-row note with the pagination behavior described in docs/connection-modes.md.

Review comment at @packages/i18n/locales/en/chat.json at line 91:
Remove the 100-chat cap claim from the `remote.accountBody` text in every
locale, keeping the remaining sign-in and history guidance. In `docs/engine.md`
lines 49–51, replace the cursorless 100-row note with the pagination behavior
described in `docs/connection-modes.md`.
