Player skins with partially transparent pixels on overlay layers cause base layers to not render #341

Open

Description

@VanguardDawn

When a player or other entity wears a skin featuring partial transparency on any of the hat, jacket, sleeve, or pants layers, then applies either Complementary Reimagined or Complementary Unbound, the skin's base layer beneath the transparent portions of the overlay will not render. Shown below is an image of a skin using 30% and 80% opacity pixels on the jacket layer, thus causing parts of the torso to fail to render with either of the Complementary shaders applied (image uses Unbound, but the same issue occurs when using Reimagined), as well as an image of the same skin with no shaders applied.

Additional info: Further testing shows that this applies constantly to the torso back, with the torso's right side flickering in and out. The torso's other sides are seemingly unaffected.

    I don't see this problem on my end. Transparent player skins work just fine. Maybe you have mods or using problematic versions of things?

    I am using it on a modpack, but for testing purposes I did make a separate modpack with all of the same versions.

    • Minecraft 1.21.1
    • NeoForge 21.1.235 (later tested on NeoForge 21.1.247)
    • Iris 1.8.14 (latest beta; 1.8.12 causes consistent game crashes)
    • Sodium 0.8.12 (later tested (0.8.13-beta.1)
    • Complementary Unbound 5.8.1

    The same issue still occurred under the exact same circumstance, and with each beta version I'd tried.

    Can you send me the skin file or username that has this issue?

    Here's an imgur link to an album only containing the skin file in use in my screenshots.

    I can't reproduce the problem with that skin file on Fabric Minecraft 1.21.11 using latest Iris. I have to assume that this is a NeoForge issue. Have you tried shader packs other than Complementary?

    I haven't tried other shader packs, no. If it is a NeoForge issue, then, would this be something to bring to that team?

    It's worth checking if it works fine with Fabric Iris first. If it does then it's probably best to report this to Iris as a problem that only happens on that NeoForge build
