Changelog

This changelog only contains changes from the first pypi release (0.5.4.3) onwards.

Latest Changes:

  • 1.7.2.dev0

    • JPype now runs end-to-end on Android for the first time, verified via a new project-local build/test harness (project/android/, see doc/android_build.rst) that cross-compiles _jpype for Android, packages it into a minimal app, and runs it on an emulator. Getting there required fixing seven real bugs, all in shared native/, native/jpype_module/, or jpype/ sources (not worked around in the harness):

      • PyJPModule_bootstrap() (the Android entry point) was missing the exception-handling wrapper (JP_PY_TRY/JP_PY_CATCH) present on every other module entry point, so a failure inside it threw a C++ exception straight across the C-linkage boundary into CPython instead of becoming a catchable Python exception - an uncaught-exception abort (SIGABRT) instead of a normal error. This is #1257 itself.
      • AttachCurrentThread/AttachCurrentThreadAsDaemon used a cast correct for desktop JNI headers but incompatible with Android's NDK jni.h, which declares the same functions with a different parameter type - native/ didn't even compile against the NDK without this.
      • Two native/jpype_module Java sources (JPypeContext.getHeapMemory(), JPypeUtilities's sealed-class detection) used java.lang.management/MethodHandleProxies, neither available on Android's platform API - replaced with portable equivalents that work identically on desktop and Android.
      • A required Java source file (Reflector0, used to get a correctly-shaped Java stack frame for invoking caller-sensitive methods) was missing from the Android build entirely, since it lives outside the source tree JPype's own build normally compiles from.
      • ClassLoader.getSystemClassLoader() - used to work around JPMS module-boundary restrictions during JPype's late class-loading on a desktop JVM launch - returns a stub on Android that can't see the app's own classes at all, unlike desktop where JPype's own JVM launch flags make it work. Fixed Android-only; an earlier unconditional attempt at this same fix regressed two desktop tests.
      • The Android bootstrap path never marked the native context as running, so every Java call immediately after a successful bootstrap failed with a spurious "JVM is not running" error.
      • An atexit shutdown hook assumed a function Android never registers, producing a harmless but noisy ignored exception on every process exit.
