The following error is showing on most Renovate PRs:

I'm not quite sure what is being done wrong here, but this only suddenly started with no prior config changes.

I cannot see any logs containing errors on the dashboard.

I saw for new crates, Renovate can update correctly. For existing ones, even I click rebase/retry, still same. So I ended up with manually updating lock file. Hopefully the issues won't come up again.

@viceice we're also seeing this issue on the crates.io repo itself (e.g. rust-lang/crates.io#12000). did something change recently on the server environment that would explain this? I think the first time I saw this issue pop up was in rust-lang/crates.io#11992 on Friday morning (CEST).

the last Rust version update on our side was rust-lang/crates.io#11938 two weeks ago, but we've had several dependency updates since then that worked as intended.

can you check which version was used as it has worked?

1.89 worked, 1.90 worked (for a while at least)

My reading seems to suggest Cargo doesn't expect anything to be at ~/.cargo, but https://github.com/containerbase/base/blob/03b8de1487afbf39e29a152d05644f77db3e8838/src/usr/local/containerbase/tools/v2/rust.sh#L11 is putting a symlink there. Should this issue be brought up for containerbase/base?

Like others, I'm seeing this issue on a private repo with Rust 1.90.0. I'm also seeing it on a Rust repo (github.com/bytes-zone/beeps) which doesn't explicitly have a Rust toolchain set.

Since this is affecting many users, can this "discussion" thing be promoted to a normal issue for visibility, even if the root cause/possible resolution isn't known yet?

Hey, I started investigating this on my repository, and found out a way to remedy this. I changed renovate version to older one (I am using the github-action). Setting renovate to v41.124.1 fixed the artifact issue for me. The directory failure seems to start happening when I set the renovate version to v41.125.0.

I tried locally using the latest version (41.135.4) with binarySource=global i.e the rust 1.90.0 version installed on my system on this repro and got no similar error.
